Why are my find and sed commands having such an adverse effect on my output file?

I have a text file containing names like this:

username1

username2

username3

I would like to remove any instances of "username" only if it is part of "username1". However, when I tried to do that using find and sed, the output file got messed up and was blank.

Here is the commands I tried and their corresponding output.

$ find. -type f -name "*.txt" -exec sed -i.bak -E "s#(^(.*)username).*$#\1#g" {} \;

$ cat.bak/filename1

$ cat.bak/filename2

$ find. -type f -name "*.txt" -exec sed -i.bak -E "s#(^(.*)username).*$#\1#g" {} \;

$ cat.bak/filename2

$ cat.bak/filename1

I think the first 3 commands that I did got stuck and couldn't execute the rest. Is there any syntax error that I made?

The correct command is:

find. -type f -name "*.txt" -exec sed -i.bak -E "s#(^(.*)username).*$#\1#g" {} \;

-exec is a bash extension that comes with GNU find. It runs the commands specified in -exec... \; as the find result becomes available, so you want to use find (the basic command without any switches) instead of -exec in order to let the other commands run as soon as possible.

And another fix for this command:

find. -type f -name "*.txt" -exec sed -i.bak -E "s#(^(.*)username).*$#\1#g" {} +

The + on the end allows sed to run immediately for each file it finds.

If you want to keep the files intact if no matches are found, then:

find. -type f -name "*.txt" -exec sed -i.bak -E "s#(^(.*)username).*$#\1#g" {} \;
